馃尵 FOOD SAFETY: WHO CONTROLS THE PRODUCTION OF CEREALS? 馃尵

If there were a war, with whom would one have to negotiate? According to 2021 FAO data, there are 18 countries that belong to the top 6 world producers of the main cereals consumed (corn, wheat, rice, barley and oat). Of these, at least 5 do not have strong reasons to be "friends" with the West.

In terms relative to the sample, China, Russia, India, Bangladesh and Viet Nam control 57% of cereals production compared to the rest of the countries in the sample. In fact, if only corn, wheat and rice are considered (the most consumed in Western world), these countries control the 60% of production against the 40% of the rest. On the other hand, of the 18 countries, the US controls 31% of all chosen cereals, China 21%, India 17% and Russia 5%.

There are many countries which produce which provide between 50% and 25% of world production. However, climate change could vary the capacity of each field, and the main producers are more likely to continue producing. In that sense, in case of conflict, these could be the countries with which one would have to negotiate and who could have some security.

The future can change. The above picture is based on extensive farming systems, but intensive farming could play an important role. In fact, the development of genetic seeds could take a turn in history.
