It is not a surprise that the most innovative countries are correlated with the richest. However, being a rich country is not synonymous with being innovative. According to the World Intellectual Property Organization, there are 33 (out of 132) that belong to quartile 4 (the most innovative).
The index takes into account 7 items: institutions, human capital and research, infrastructure, market sophistication, business sophistication, knowledge and technology outputs, and creative outputs. As can be seen, except for China as a special situation, the rest have a solid rule of law, there is high activity in research, they seek private capital and the venture is focused on generating an impact on Science or Technology.
The big question is... What happen with Latin America, Africa and rest of Asia? The answer is not easy, but the common denominator is they contempt for Research, Science and Technology, they have economies strongly based on commodities, they have lower leves of industrialisation without investments, and their regimens used to be populists, militarist or one-party systems.
The final question is, facing the deglobalization process, will the world table change?
