⚖️ NIGER: A SUMMARY ABOUT THE COUP D'ÉTAT ⚖️

Niger belongs to the Sahel region (as defined by the UNISS), which has recently come under attack by extremist groups (Boko Haram, EIGS, Ansar Dine, FLM and MUYAO). However, since the 19th century it has been plundered by French colonialism, and in the 20th century by American colonialism. In 1960, Niger became independent, but its lack of development has made it vulnerable to any armed group that tried to seize power.

The overthrow of the Libyan government (2010-2012) was the beginning of Islamist extremist incursions into the Sahel. That is why many countries in the region needed Western aid, but all the harassment and impoverishment caused by them, created supporters of any anti-French/US movement. This was capitalised on by Russia and China in the aftermath of the pandemic.

China has helped to region with investments and infrastructure. Russia has made presence thanks to the paramilitary Wagner Group (the same involved in Ukraine war). Since 2020, many countries such as Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Burkina Faso and Sudan have had coups, where the common denominator is anti-Western sentiment.

The July 26, 2023 the military seized power supported by the population. The causes have been the fight against corruption and the nationalisation of uranium mines. The US and France have been opposed (they have military bases there) and ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) has threatened to intervene. The problem is that within ECOWAS there are also pro-Russia and pro-China countries such as Mali and Burkina Faso. Finally, Nigeria (the most advanced country) does not have the consensus and could be weakened in a conflict that only is useful for the Western.

The relevance of Niger is that is part of Energy Security of Western due to uranium [see: https://jjplindex.blogspot.com/2023/08/energy-security-who-controls-uranium.html ] and other resources such as phosphates, oil, gold, and coltan. In addition, gas pipelines for Spain and Italy pass underneath. This is compounded by the loss of support for the US and France in the region, where the African countries has been demanding: sovereignty, fair resource sales and decent working conditions.

The map shows the ECOWAS countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo. In red are the openly anti-Western countries and in blue the rest. Yellow is Niger.
